Black Muses Project

What is the Black Muses Project?

The Black Muses Project was started by Sade DuBoise on Valentines Day, 2020, as an ode and love letter to black women with a call for muses in the PDX metro area. Initially, only 5-10 women were expected to be apart of the project, but more than 30 reached out in the first day. The demand to be apart of this project grew, so DuBoise made the decision to cap it at 50 muses.

DuBoise uses Oregon parks, natural areas, forests, and beaches for the backgrounds of the muses choice. Muses also choose the clothing, hair styles, accessories, and any props that represent them. Along with the photo shoot is an interview.

This 1.5 year project will culminate into 50 original paintings using references from the photo shoots, limited edition fine art prints, a book representing all the muses and their stories, and a showcase. The showcase will honor all muses apart of the project, where they will be able to unveil their paintings among family, friends, and community. DuBoise plans to rotate the paintings among different black, and black-allied businesses throughout Oregon.

Are you currently taking muses?

Due to COVID-19 there has been cancellations and reschedules in the project. Once Oregon has lifted its Shelter in Place orders for all counties in Oregon, the need for muses in the project will be reassessed.

If I am a muse, will I be in the final product(s)?

While DuBoise would like every muse who comes forward to be in the final product(s) such as original paintings, limited edition fine art prints, book, and showcase, there are technical, logistical, and stylized reasons why a muse may not move forward in the project.

If any of these issues arise, the muse will be notified via email. Due to the projects timeline, re-shoots are not being considered.

Are muses compensated?

Muses are apart of the project voluntarily, but will receive the first proof print from their paintings capture. These will be given to muses during the showcase.

What timeline is the project on?

DuBoise is spending about 30-40 hours per week on the project outside of her work, school, and family obligations. She is expecting to finish the original paintings in about a year, and subsequent parts of the project in 3-6 months afterwards.

When a venue and date has been selected for the showcase, muses will be notified for participation via mail and email.

How can I support the Black Muses Project?

DuBoise thanks every muse who has participated in this project thus far. This project wouldn’t be possible without you. She also thanks those who have shown her love and support through social media, calls and text.

If you would like to financially support the project, you can do so by purchasing Zanele’s limited edition fine art print, the first piece that helped inspire the project here (there are only 11x14 limited edition fine art prints left). Once the project is done, there will be an opportunity to purchase limited edition fine art prints and the Black Muses book.
